Next year sees the sequel to the 2018 horror/sci-fi shark film The Meg. Here's everything we know about The Meg 2: The Trench.
The first film told the story of a group of scientists who encountered the titular gigantic prehistoric shark. The Meg is an adaptation of the 1997 Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by author Steve Alten. Audiences were thrilled and the film went on to gross over $530 million worldwide. Based on these numbers, it makes sense that Warner Bros. Pictures would be eager to churn out a sequel, possibly leading to it becoming the next blockbuster sci-fi/hohorro So what do we know about next year's The Meg 2: The Trench? How will the original story continue and what new adventures will we see? Who is returning from the first film and will there be any new faces joining them? When and where can we see the movie when it's released? And what else should viewers know about The Meg 2: The Trench?
Meg 2: Plot
Megalodon attacks divers in Warner Bros. Pictures
As mentioned, the original film The Meg was based on Alten's 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror. Two years later, Alten published a sequel novel, The Trench, which would be the basis for the new film. While we don't yet know what the sequel's plot will focus on, we can guess what we might see based on the story from the book.
The Trench begins several years after the end of the first book, with Jonas Taylor studying a young megalodon held in captivity. As other members of the research teams explore the Mariana Trench, where the megalodon was first found, they discover another prehistoric creature, Kronosaurus. This creature was a large marine reptile that evolved to hunt in packs and lived in a trench. Now, faced with this new creature in addition to megalodons, Jonas must face his demons from the first book to try and hold his life together.
We don't yet know exactly how Meg 2 will follow the plot of the sequel book, but at least we have a basis for what we can probably expect from the story. The title The Meg 2: The Trench seems to suggest that the film will follow the book, but again, nothing concrete is known. There are four sequel books following The Trench (with more potentially in the works), so there's no shortage of source material if Warner Bros. wanted it. Pictures wanted to pursue as their next sci-fi action franchise.
The Meg 2: The Cast
The Meg - Jason StathamWarner Bros
Jason Statham will reprise his lead role as Jonas Taylor in the sequel. Cliff Curtis is set to return as James "Mac" Mackreides, Taylor's friend and the institute's operations manager. Page Kennedy will return as DJ and Shuya Sophia Cai's Meiying, Suyin's daughter, will return.
Aside from these four, no other cast members from the first film will be returning. It's still early and maybe their involvement is just a secret. Considering how many characters died in the first film, some returns seem more unlikely than others.
The returning cast will be joined by a number of new players. Resident Evil's Sienna Guillory will be the new female lead. Not much is known about her character, except that she is the head of the applied sciences division. Actress and model Skyler Samuels will play Jonas Taylor, a submarine crew member who goes on an adventure. The film's main antagonist will be played by Snowfall star Sergio Peris-Mencheta, who is said to be a hardened mercenary. Chinese star Wu Jing is also joining the cast, although his exact role and plot are unknown at this time.
Date of publication
Warner Bros. Pictures is set to release The Meg 2: The Trench in theaters on August 4, 2023. As a co-production between the United States and China, the first film was released simultaneously in both countries in 2018. It is not known if the sequel will use the same strategy as the current release in the United States only.
The Meg Franchise
Jason Statham and the Megalodon in Warner Bros. Pictures
With a total of six books in The Meg franchise, Warner Bros. Pictures a wealth of source material if they wanted to turn this property into a new franchise. Already evoking Jaws and Jurassic Park vibes, this potential franchise could combine elements of the two into a new modern sci-fi monster story – a mainstream, less campy Sharknado. If anything is an indicator of success, it's sequels and reboots.

This movie set records for the Razzies, but is it Adam Sandler's sneakiest and funniest Jack and Jill movie?

In addition to his award-winning performance in Uncut Gems and critically acclaimed roles in dramas like Hustle, Adam Sandler has made some entertaining films. And while Sandler fans are quick to point to such quotable comedy classics as Happy Gilmore and Aquarius, it's true that most of his humor falls into love-it-or-hate-it silliness. His comedies may not be for everyone, but they've definitely earned him a sizable fan base. Knowing this, why was Jack and Jill so loudly and completely rejected - even hated? In fact, the film was so poorly received upon its initial release that Jack and Jill actually set a record for Razzie awards, becoming the first film to hit every category.
The truth is, once negative sentiment around a film takes hold, it's almost impossible to reverse course. And as a viewer, it's not easy to watch with an open mind when the consensus is so negative. But there's another truth: Jack and Jill is not only Sandler's most underrated comedy, but it may be his most sly and hilarious film to date. Here are just a few of the subversively funny moments, scenes and characters from this overlooked comedic gem.
